Brief Description
Dr. Billian K. Otundo is a postdoctoral researcher at the Cluster of Excellence Africa Multiple at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, where she is concurrently pursuing her habilitation at the Department of English Linguistics at the same university. Alongside her research, Dr. Otundo contributes to the academic community by teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Dr. Otundo completed her doctorate as a fellow of the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS), with a dissertation (Otundo, 2018) examining ethnically marked varieties of Kenyan English. Her current habilitation project focuses on multilingual African learning environments, with particular emphasis on translanguaging. More details on her research are available here. At the Cluster of Excellence, Dr. Otundo is also co-convener and organiser of two postdoctoral working groups, with research extending into language localisation and digital innovations, as well as the intersection of language, artificial intelligence, and accelerated learning. Dr. Otundo’s academic journey also includes a postdoctoral research position at Radboud University in the Netherlands, where she was a co-applicant on a project in collaboration with Moi University, INCLUDE, and the African Studies Centre at Leiden University. She analysed public narratives used by civil society organisations and community-based organisations advocating for land rights in Kenya (e.g., 2022, 2019, and 2018). Her research explored the intersection of language, social justice, and land advocacy in the Kenyan context, enriching her broader understanding of linguistic and social issues in Africa. Details can be found here. Her research activities integrate quantitative and qualitative data, with expertise in various analytical tools, including SPSS, R-Programming, Praat, and MAXQDA.
In addition to her academic responsibilities, Dr. Otundo has organised workshops, conference panels, and linguistics laboratory colloquia, and has presented papers at numerous international conferences across Europe and Africa. Her commitment to fostering academic exchange is further demonstrated by her role as a founding member of the Philippine-Kenya Education Network (PEN), which brings together five universities in Kenya and five in the Philippines for online exchanges.
Dr. Otundo is also engaged in collaborative research on intonation patterns in Kenyan English and Swahili, in partnership with the Chair of the Phonetic Laboratory at the University of Cologne, Germany. She has contributed to several international research initiatives, for instance, a study on code-switching in radio phone-in programmes from Kenya and Cameroon (Otundo & Mühleisen, 2022) and a project on the decolonisation of higher education in Africa from a cognitive linguistics perspective. This latter project, in collaboration with a colleague from Collège Montmorency, Canada, addresses the paradoxes surrounding the use of ex-colonial European languages by African readers and writers (Otundo & Dodonou, 2021). Dr. Otundo’s contributions to educational discourse are significant, particularly her recent analysis of the challenges in implementing the Education Article of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Kenya (Otundo, 2022). She has also co-authored a study on the role of toponyms in university linguistics curricula as a means of promoting epistemological decolonization in African education (Otundo & Doumbia, 2023).
In her professional capacity, Dr. Otundo is regularly invited to review and provide input on the linguistics curriculum at Moi University in Kenya. Furthermore, she was approached as an expert to streamline two policies for the County Government of Bungoma, Kenya—namely the Gender Mainstreaming Policy and the Disability Mainstreaming Policy—offering expertise on language accessibility and multicultural inclusion.
